At a young age, I became enchanted by the art of woodturning. It all started when I signed up for a woodturning course at the age of 13. I had no idea that this simple decision would ignite a lifelong passion. The moment I touched the lathe, I felt an undeniable connection to the wood and tools, as if I had discovered a hidden talent just waiting to be unleashed.

Taking the Next Step

After finishing the course, I was eager to continue my woodturning journey. I decided to buy a second-hand lathe from my instructor, Eddie Noel. For me, this purchase was monumental. Owning my lathe meant I could practice and experiment independently. The thrill of possibility filled me, but I quickly realized that the road ahead would not be easy.

The Challenge of Pen Turning

My first foray into pen turning began shortly after acquiring my lathe. I was inspired by the stunning pens that could be crafted through this art. However, my early attempts were less than successful. Every time I tried, it felt like I was climbing a steep hill. Most of my pens broke during the process, and I managed to produce only one usable pen out of every ten or so tries.

This experience could have overwhelmed me, but I was determined. I committed myself to learning everything I could about pen turning. I read books, watched numerous instructional videos, and kept practicing. Each failure became a lesson, guiding me to improve my techniques. I experimented with various materials, such as hard and soft woods, as well as resin and composite blanks.

Progress and Triumph

Years of dedication began to pay off. After crafting hundreds of pens, my proficiency soared. The excitement of completing a functional, beautiful pen was incredible. With each pen I completed, my confidence grew. Over the past 14 years, I have created more than 600 pens, and each one tells its own story, documenting my journey and the lessons I have learned.

Sharing the Craft

Not only have I enjoyed making pens, but I also had the joy of sharing my knowledge with others. I have taught over 200 students how to craft their own pens, guiding them through each step and helping them discover the joy of woodturning. Watching my students create their pens and sharing in their excitement is one of the most rewarding experiences.

Embracing Failure

Through my experience, I have learned that failure is not the end but rather a stepping stone toward mastery. Each broken pen and each mistake has contributed to my growth. I have come to value the importance of patience and persistence in refining one’s craft. The path to becoming skilled is often filled with obstacles, but it is these challenges that create a meaningful journey.

Final Thoughts

Reflecting on my woodturning journey reveals a remarkable adventure filled with highs and lows. From my beginnings at age 13 to my current role as a skilled craftsman and teacher, I’ve realized that dedication and a desire to learn are keys to success. I encourage anyone interested in woodturning to embrace challenges and enjoy the creative process. With commitment and practice, you can create beautiful pieces that embody your unique style and passions.

Whether you are starting out or have years of experience, remember that each pen you make is a step toward mastery. Celebrate your successes, learn from your failures, and enjoy the journey. The world of pen turning is waiting for you, and the rewards are truly worth the effort.
